"Maybach"..

Hope mission

Nahed Nassr meets a young man of accomplishment
"Muslim, Christian -- I'm Egyptian. Fellah, Saeedi -- I'm Egyptian. Nubian, Arab -- I'm Egyptian..." And so the song continues, reflecting -- in the most straightforward and accessible way imaginable -- a grassroots patriotism long cherished but seldom felt by the young. Ana Masry (I'm Egyptian) is representative of the work of singer, songwriter and composer Ihab Abduh, whose presence on the culture scene was already felt while he was a management student at the American University in Cairo (AUC). There, Abduh participated in the broadest range of student activities, and in 1995 became president of the Egyptian branch of AIESEC, the largest student organisation in the world. Still, Abduh was best known for his beautiful voice as a singer, while following graduation he pursued nationalist interests more directly through being, among other things, a partnership and business- development officer at the Canadian International Development Research Center (IDRC), at the Middle East and North Africa regional office of the Near East Foundation (NEF) and Nestle Egypt. By 1999 he was ready to establish his own youth-led non-profit organisation, Fathet Kheir (a proverbial expression meaning "auspicious start"), cofounding the Nahdet El-Mahrousa NGO in 2002 and earning a masters in international development from the University of Pittsburgh two years later. In his thesis Abduh focussed on the role of the NGO sector including such topics as philanthropy fair trade and development. In the same year Abduh was elected "social enterpreneur" by the Ashoka Foundation. As well as chairing of Nahdet El Mahrousa and teaching a course on NGO management at AUC, Abduh hosts an English-language Radio Cairo FM show named Let's practise what we preach, broadcast every Monday at midnight. The president of the Egyptian Federation of Young People's NGOs, Abduh was the first Egyptian to receive the Global AIESEC Alumni Entrepreneurship and Leadership Award at the organisation's 2007 International Congress in Istanbul. But he has not stopped singing.
"My love of singing was always there. At university, it was my favourite hobby. I was a big fan of [the late "father of Egyptian music"] Sayed Darwish. His songs have patriotic import as well as human and spiritual meanings. I used to sing his songs at university events. In 2002 I did some vocal training to improve my voice." It hadn't even occurred to him to compose lyrics. "I used to read the great Egyptian vernacular poets: Salah Jahin, Ahmad Fouad Negm, Fouad Haddad. I loved them, of course, but I had a feeling that there were more recent issues requiring fresh language and fresh treatment. Like Sayed Darwish, [the great oppositional composer-singer] Sheikh Imam is great -- but neither can address young people now to the same perfect effect." Though it shares the theme of many Sayed Darwish songs -- national unity -- Abduh's masterpiece, Ana Masry, for example, is conceived in response to media approaches to issues of sect: "I believe Egyptian society does not suffer from profound problems deriving from religion, race, or ethnicity. Nevertheless, the way the question is addressed the our media does not really reflect this non-sectarian reality. Ana Masry delivers the pure message in a simple way." And there is a story to how the song came about, too: "I wrote the lyrics in India. When I reached that country, many sad questions came to my mind: why those people are able to keep and develop their 5000-year-old civilization while we could only skim the surface of ours... For one thing, I felt that our identity as Egyptians is far richer than we are willing to acknowledge." Most songs that make their way to the media, Abduh believes, reflect neither the dreams nor the frustrations of Egyptians, especially the young. Artists who fail to "go with the flow" on the other hand are denied access to audiences; they cannot even be sure of their art surviving across generations. "There is a generation of writers who are not going with the flow. They address our everyday issues in their works. But most of them have neither the will nor the ability to publish their work. Sheikh Imam and [his long time collaborator the vernacular poet Ahmed Foud] Negm are rather the exception; their experience cannot be repeated now." Besides, Abduh sees himself as part of a far more recent and less politicised scene that includes the Westelbalad band and Wagih Aziz as well as others, and he is particularly fond of Mohamed Mounir.
"My favourite singer," he says in reference to the latter, "used to be the only singer who tackled serious issues in an artistic way after the 1980s. Now there are other artists on the same track, which is promising though support is very limited. Those artists, songwriters, composers, or singers, do not have the financial resources to reach a wider audience. There are a few cultural entities backing some of them which is a commendable effort but it is not enough. Those entities do not have the appropriate strategic planning. The Cultural Mawred, for example, in collaboration with a Lebanese production company produced a CD of Fathy Salama with a price tag of LE50; now no CD by an Egyptian pop star will cost more than LE30." For his own part Abduh made his way to the audience through live concerts -- events that, few and far between as they remain, he has used to introduce other young and promising artists. At two concerts he gave in July at the Sawi Cultural Wheel and AUC, for example, he invited Laila Bahgat and the American-Egyptian Karim Nagi to perform alongside him: the first offered Sufi-inspired songs while the latter played drums. "A concert for me is an opportunity to publicise our work as young artists with a different perspective. My special guests have the same perspective on the diversity and richness of the Egyptian personality." In his upcoming concert on 27 November -- "a concert for national unity" -- Abduh will host hymns and folklore. Abduh's own repertoire includes some 15 songs he has written himself but he also performs work by other lyricists like Nasser El-Geel. His dream is to make more room for music in his life. "Singing and songwriting for me is another way of delivering the same massage. I feel that I need to give it more time." He is currently working on an album that brings together his favorite songs. "My songs don't deal with new issues; what makes them different is that they are more hopeful. I like to focus on the light, to give hope in the future as much as I am able to."

The singles set

A growing number of young men and women are either financially unable to marry or are happily trading the security of married life for the hassle-free single status, Nahed Nassr examines a swelling wave
I am not anti-marriage, but I refuse to sacrifice just to have the title of 'married woman'," declared 35-year-old Amina, a single secondary school teacher who lives in Baragil, a small town on the outskirts of Cairo. Even though building a family of her own was one of Amina's long-standing dreams, she now prefers to keep it a dream rather than living the "nightmare" that is marriage. "I was brought up in a family that believes in mutual respect and understanding among its members," she said. Her late father used to respect her mother in a way that she fears is difficult for any man to replicate. Both of Amina's elder sisters are married, but their lives have taken a sour turn. "One got divorced after a couple of years and is now raising a child on her own and the other had to quit her job to join her husband in a Gulf country and is now forced to stay home looking after her three kids," Amina said.
All the same, living with her widowed mother and her divorced sister is not trouble-free. Both are constantly pressuring her to accept the first man that knocks at the door. "My mother is afraid that I will end up a lonely spinster. She thinks my divorced sister is better off because at least she has a child to look after who will grow to keep her company in the future," Amina muses at how her family thinks. Reflecting on her three ex-fiancés, Amina maintained she could not have put up with any one of the three. "I really am enjoying my life as it is and I am earning my living by myself. I will marry only if I find a real man," she said.
For Amina, remaining unmarried is a matter of personal choice. Other young Egyptians are less lucky, as they are financially unable to afford the often high cost of marriage. Samira, a young woman in her early 30s, works in a clothing store in Ataba. Her boyfriend, Mohamed, works in a factory. They were to be engaged, but her brothers have refused to take any official step until he has a flat ready.
For the hopeful couple, the prospect of marriage is getting more and more distant as time goes by. For one, living with Mohamed's family in their two-room flat is out of the question. Mohamed and Samira are looking for a long-term rental that is easy on the pocket. Secondly, they are both insecure in their jobs. Poor working conditions has Mohamed switching jobs year after year and the clothing store where Samira works pays low wages. Samira wishes the good old days would return when every mother prepared for her daughter's wedding day by buying the necessary home accessories, and the bridegroom was the one responsible for the flat and the furniture. "Now, things are different. The bride and her bridegroom are almost equally sharing the financial cost of getting married. Their respective families can only afford blessing the marriage," she commented bitterly. Samira's father is an elderly man who for many years worked in a factory and was barely able to educate his four children and provide for everyday needs. "My older sisters were lucky because their husbands already had flats of their own. Living in your own flat gives you a sense of security that rentals fail to provide. My brothers are right in postponing our official engagement for now," she said.
In a country where contact between couples outside the course of wedlock is still unsanctioned, how does the couple steer the course of their relationship under such daunting circumstances? "We meet from time to time in public places, so as to keep our reputation intact. I love Mohamed, but I also want to get married the proper way with my family's blessings. You never know what might happen in the future. I do not want to follow the path of other girls who opted for unregistered marriages, sacrificing their family ties in the process," Samira said. Unlike her mother, who married at the age of 18, she and most of her friends are over 30 and having trouble tying the knot for financial reasons.
Amina, Samira and Mohamed are among a growing number of young people in Egypt today who have remained single for a myriad of reasons.
According to a recent Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) report, nine million Egyptians over the conventional marrying age of 35 are single. Surprisingly, the number of unmarried females is only 3.5 million, compared to 5.5 million unmarried males.
The report findings induced some MPs to say spinsterhood was becoming a threat to social stability, urging the government to take urgent steps to facilitate marriage. They suggested a handful of measures, such as providing young people with access to cheaper flats in newly established cities, starting campaigns to raise people's awareness of the importance of reducing marriage costs, facilitating collective weddings and launching fundraising campaigns to provide young people with marriage loans.
To address the dire social consequences of the late marriage phenomenon, a collective effort between governmental and non-governmental parties -- namely the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Communications, the National Council for Women, several social research centres and a number of NGOs -- resulted in the launch of a campaign in 2005 under the slogan: "Marriage delay is not the end of the world". The campaign target was single young women in several governorates; its aim being to integrate them into voluntary social and cultural activities that would render them active and productive members of society. As promising as it sounds, this campaign, which began in mid-2005, has faltered, as it seems to have been planned as a short-term project, with no strategy in place for its maintenance and progress.
Another slightly bizarre response to the singles phenomenon was adopted by Hayam Darbouk, the founder of the Right to Life NGO, whose motto is: "One wife is not enough." The association promotes the idea of men taking more than one wife and its main objective is to assist unmarried women to find and marry married men. According to Darbouk, multiple marriages will solve many problems, including immoral love affairs, secret marriages and marriages to foreign wives instead of Egyptians. "I would help my own husband marry another wife if he wants to," Darbouk tells her listeners to display how passionately she believes in her mission.
Professor and sociologist, Shahida El-Baz, believes the so- called conventional age for marriage should be scrapped, "simply because it does not exist anymore." In the past, she said, most Egyptian girls married between the ages of 13 and 15 and if a girl reached 20 and had still not married, she was considered a spinster. At present, due to cultural and social changes, women start to think about marriage after graduation and only a few will get married at 23 or 24. Most girls marry in their late 20s and mid-30s, when they can afford it. El-Baz believes the main reason for the rise in the marriage age is due to deteriorating economic conditions. Young people now are forced to grapple with high rates of unemployment, insecure jobs and low wages. While stressing changes in social values, El-Baz thinks marriage is still the most acceptable social establishment. However, the institution of marriage is not as sacred as it was in times gone by, she said. Those who have the money to get married get divorced as fast as they marry. Contributing factors are also the spread of other forms of relationships between men and women besides the traditional marriage. According to El-Baz, the word "spinster" that used to stigmatise single women does not have the same meaning and is rarely used anymore.
Medically speaking, Rima El-Khofsh, a doctor, says that marriage before the age of 40 is preferable, but scientific progress has helped men and women remain fertile for longer. In terms of sexual efficiency, El-Khofsh said that good health and sexual compatibility are more determining factors.
The social stigma of pushing 40 and being single has not, however, altogether disappeared. Karima is a mother of four and her only daughter is a single woman in her late 30s. "Going to a relative's wedding is really hard. I do not like it when other women of the family keep asking me why my girl has not married yet, nor when they keep wishing her good luck in finding a groom. It sounds like she is to blame in some way," Karima said. Karima admitted, however, to sometimes giving in to antiquated modes of thinking, saying that although she trusts her daughter, she keeps a close watch on what she wears, where she goes and when she comes back home.
Physiologist Hani Yehia said there were social, cultural and physiological factors contributing to the delay in marriage. He believes that remaining single beyond the socially acceptable age of marriage leads to a feeling of alienation, frustration and failure. He also mentions sleeping and appetite disorders, unease and nervousness as a result of sexual suppression. "Those symptoms could carry on even after the marriage, especially in our closed societies," he said. Yet, physiologically speaking, Yehia does not believe there is a perfect age for marriage. According to him, what makes anyone mature enough to be responsible for a family has nothing to do with age. "It all depends on the social context, previous experiences and mental and physiological health. Those factors could be different from one person to another in one society and even in one family," he said.
Out of personal choice, economic inadequacy or rapidly changing social norms, more and more Egyptians are remaining single these days. Although the phenomenon has some people ringing the danger bells, Egyptian society has, in general, gradually eased itself into a new acceptance of the social situation.

Nocturnal diversions

There is no question about Ramadan nights being a special time of year, writes Nahed Nassr, but are they equally enjoyable for everyone?
For the duration of Ramadan, from sunrise to sunset -- the fasting hours -- a certain chaotic harmony controls the pace of life throughout Egypt. Even non-Muslims and foreigners are subject to it. Nor are they the only ones to be seen eating, drinking or smoking in public. Still, whether or not they are fasting, everyone feels a difference in the way things progress; everyone partakes of the controlled chaos. Towards sunset, for example, the streets are blessed with a quietude profoundly foreign to Cairo, and some people make a point of going out only then, to enjoy the city as it never is at any other time of year. Not until a few hours after Iftar, however, does the lunar month's unique range of nocturnal activities begin. Different people, as it turns out, do very different things.
Some hit the cafés, many of which are converted into "tents" or otherwise themed venues; they have TV screens that play the month's entertainment specialties while serving these media delicacies' culinary counterparts. By now a tradition of the bigger restaurants and five-star hotels is to set up tents, especially for the late- night meal of Sohour, sometimes with live entertainment involving the best known pop stars. As an employee of one such establishment in Zamalek puts it, "I can tell you the singers make a fortune out of that month. Then again, the audiences are kind of well off; the tents are not for everyone."
Many stay indoors, gathering with their (extended) families around their own TV screens, in the cosiness of their homes; most, indeed, will spend the first week doing just that: an opportunity to affirm the blood ties Islam stresses so much in a somewhat large-scale version of Christmas in the West. According to one young lady, the mother of two, "besides Ramadan's spiritual meaning for every Muslim, it is also a special opportunity to spend time with family and friends you don't normally see much of for the rest of the year. In the first week we gather in one of the family homes, preparing the dishes together and having Iftar all in the same place in front of the TV. Ramadan is the family month." Others, like one university student who says he has kept up the routine since secondary school, capitalise on the month's status as a time of answered prayers and intensify religious rituals for its duration, paying little attention to everything else: "every night my friends and I gather at the mosque to pray taraweeh [a Ramadan-specific extension of the evening prayers], then we stay there reading the Quran all night."
Cafés, especially variations on the traditional coffee house, remain by far the most affordable and popular option for all, at least after the first week of Ramadan has passed. One man in his 40s is especially appreciative: "on Ramadan nights the cafés give the city a special magic. Everyone's awake passing time, whether doing right or wrong; you feel the life oozing out of everything. One of my favourite places on a Ramadan night is Khan Al-Khalili, where Egypt's very distinct coffee-house atmosphere is most apparent. It's particularly satisfying to have shisha in the company of friends." And yet hotels and other tourist establishments remain operational during the holy month, serving alcohol to whoever asks for it except for Egyptian citizens, including Christians, for whom alcohol is legally banned for the duration of Ramadan -- a somewhat absurd rule occasionally mistakenly extended to Arab or Muslim non-Egyptians. Most bars and nightclubs close for the month, admittedly, but some of those that stay open rather more sensibly knock alcohol off the menu altogether, or -- operating in secret -- raise the price. One regular customer of a famous downtown café complains of the alcohol policy: "for years I've met my friends and sometimes done my work here, largely because I can have a beer at a reasonable price. But in Ramadan they stop serving beer, and this always puzzles me because it's not like I become someone else during Ramadan -- why should customers change their preferences for a month and then return to normal?" He added that one bar in Emadeddin stays open "after a fashion" but raises prices to an exploitative degree. Barmen, like Hani, acknowledge that Ramadan is an appropriate time to take off, mainly for religious reasons, but says it presents people like himself with a huge financial problem that they must prepare for in advance: "what if one hasn't saved money for this forced vacation? Then finding alternative work becomes necessary, and work isn't always available on the spur of the moment."
Abu Radi, almost 50, has been working in a downtown bar for 15 years, and he used to have a one-month job in a sandwich joint during Ramadan: "of course the pay isn't even comparable, because at the sandwich place you don't get tips. Some barmen stay at home for the month, but I can't afford to do that." Abu Radi's suggestion is that bar owners should pay their staff, even if they reduce the pay by half: "that way they don't lose much and they get to keep their staff, too. Then again, every employer knows it would be easy to get a replacement if the worst came to the worst." For Henna, a nightclub waitress for eight years and her family's main support, the business of finding a month's work to make up for the loss of income is even harder: "I was working as a maid when my neighbour offered me a job at the kitchen of a restaurant, he said, which turned out to be a nightclub; and I was eventually promoted to waiting tables. I'm earning more than I ever have. I used to save for it, too, but it's not so easy for a girl to find work for a month."
According to one young man who works in a five-star hotel bar, however, "those working in tourist zones wish the whole year were Ramadan. Restrictions on alcohol bring in so many more customers, you see." Samir, a liquor store attendant, says the restrictions on alcohol are understandable and normal by now, pointing out that stores do not even open during the day out of respect for the faithful. Egyptians eager to drink must peruse illegal stores like those located in the suburbs of Shubra, but, he adds, they should be aware of the high risk of alcohol poisoning. Perhaps a cup of tea in Khan Al-Khalili is not so bad after all.

Hipping the hop of Sudan

Nahed Nassr listens while American black culture infiltrates the Sudanese refugee community.
"Published in El Ahram Weekly Newspaper "
Studio Emad El-Deen, downtown, was where he chose to meet. "It's a good place to talk, and you can meet my female trainees." Amin Jalloh, a Sirra Leone's who has lived in Egypt since 2003, spoke fondly of starting up the A-441 rap band last year. "Rap is a tool for consistency and for a never-give-up sort of attitude, not a tool for violence," he said, trying to convey a message to young people taken in by "the negative aspects of the commercial rap". It's been a few months now since, together with other rappers -- including Egyptians -- Jalloh joined a pilot project of the as yet unregistered Egyptian Refugee Multicultural Council (Tadamon), the first phase of which targets young female rap fans from the Sudanese refugee community. The idea is to counter the gangsta culture that has developed among refugees, with two gangs -- the Lost Boys and the Outlaws -- not only rapping but literally killing each other, notably outside the American University in Cairo main campus on a recent occasion. Jalloh concedes that, for these young people as much as for him, Hip Hop is not only a way of life but an identity -- a means to self-assertion against all manner of economic and social despair -- but he rejects the model of the "tough, undefeated and violent TV rapper". It is partly ignorance, he says: "they do not know that this is not the everyday life of the famous Hip Hop stars, and it's part of what we're trying to teach them -- that Hip Hop is not a life style, that it's a tool -- a form of entertainment and also self-expression."
Research conducted at the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies (FMRS) Centre at the American University -- founding Director Hakon Jacob has been particularly concerned with Sudanese refugees in Egypt -- indicates that gangstas are mostly men in the 15-35 age bracket, with the majority in their early 20s; most are unmarried though "elders" have stable partners with children. Tribal and religious affiliation play little part in gang constitution, and females -- excluded from "official" meetings and decision-making as well as the delinquent acts themselves -- play the role of gang trophies. But because they can float among different groups, it is the women who act as informers and double agents. And it is in the Hip-Hop-isation of identity that gang culture is most visible: Tupac Shakur is the best known role model; and gangstas dress differently from the rest of the community. According to Mohamed Yousri, Tadamon coordinator, "part of the problem is the lack of integration of those young people into Egyptian society. Affiliation with a gang, for them, has replaced the normal sense of communal belonging." Tadamon, he went on to explain, is in the process of establishing a space for Egyptian and Sudanese young people to meet and interact. "Rap in this case is a common aspect. In our rap class there are around nine Sudanese girls but the trainers are volunteers of different nationalities including Egyptians. This is only a start. We intend to extend the classes to include Egyptian trainees as well, for example."
An as yet unpublished feasibility study conducted by the centre in June 2006 found that the Sudanese refugee community suffers from a whole chain of obstacles with no access to education or work, inadequate housing and healthcare, and other symptoms of marginalisation. The problems may be endemic among large groups of Egyptians too, but the Sudanese have an even harder time facing them because they have no real sense of community. Divorced from tribal culture, they are brought up to think they will manage to immigrate to the West -- only to end up without a future even here. Research team member, Akram Abdu, says Hip Hop is being used as a tool to connect with these people: "We organised several rap classes and English courses in which many gang members participated. But all they get is two hours a week; the rest of the time they are back in their world. What these young people need is rehabilitation. Abdu even goes furthur to suggest the establishment of rehabilitation residencies whereby violent members of the community might learn to lead an alternative, healthy life learning science, art and sport. One street vendor from Darfur blames it less on the lack of rehabilitation- integration than on the Egyptian police choosing to turn a blind eye, however: "there are streets in Al-Hay Al-Ashir and Ain Shams where I can't even pass without getting in trouble. The Egyptian security know about it, but what do they do to protect people?"
And yet a handful of young men, including three of those responsible for the AUC incident, have been arrested and convicted. Abdu agrees that, "security should be effective and visible in marginalised areas where such incidents are more likely to happen". Indeed according to Essam, an elderly Egyptian living in Ain Shams, an iron fist is required: "those young people should be sent back to their country! Historically speaking, Egyptians and Sudanese are brothers. We had them here for decades and vice versa, without any problems. We used to respect each other. But the new generation is different. They do not even show respect to their own people. Why don't they go back where they came from?" Though eliciting accusations of racism, this view is actually shared by some Sudanese political leaders to whom repatriation is the best answer to the problem; those young people are needed to rebuild southern Sudan. But others contend that repatriation will only replicate the problem elsewhere. The question is clearly not easily resolved.
According to Hakoon's research, the refugee gangs in Cairo are concentrated in Abassiya and Ain Shams -- exclusive territories for the two dominant groups, but the phenomenon can also be seen in Al-Hay Al-Ashir and Maadi. It is difficult to make accurate estimates of numbers, but the two main gangs -- the Lost Boys and the Outlaws -- can mobilise up to 200 members each. Smaller gangs include Steel Dog, Five Girls, California, Notorious B.I.G, P2K and the Big Twelve. "It can be said with some confidence," the research papers read, "that there are hundreds of gang affiliates in Cairo, representing a substantial number of southern Sudanese refugee youth." Gang behaviour involves rather more than aggression, too: "there are important 'positive' values such as solidarity, generosity and compassion, which are inherent in gang behaviour in Cairo; for example, they arrange field trips, football tournaments and other social gatherings, and collect money for peers that need medical treatment." Integration, rehabilitation, repatriation, security: all are perspectives on the same intractable issue, but it seems each will have a part to play in tackling the problems of these young people who manage to be simultaneously victims and culprits.
